Wiman compels me with his finely-tuned ear, his sharp language, and his ability to write easily and beautifully of difficult topics, including topics many would not dare cover due to their complexity. In the new anthology Joy , he does just that: he offers a brief essay on joy and then presents one hundred poems on that singular but elusive subject. Between the poems are excerpts from essays, letters, and novels which offer additional insight and thoughts on the topic, so the book, despite being compiled from a wide variety of voices, can be read as a unified whole.
Some of that knowledge must come from the decade Wiman spent as the editor of Poetry magazine, and it gives me confidence that his selections were well-considered. This is not the first anthology which Wiman has edited, nor his first use of the number —when Poetry magazine turned a century old in , he helped edit and introduce The Open Door: Poems, Years of Poetry Magazine.
Wiman was the editor of Poetry for ten years, so the his collaboration with Don Share the current editor was essentially a professional undertaking; Joy , on the other hand, feels like a much more personal project. His descriptions can be scathing or tender, sometimes in the same sentence, and his vocabulary and word choice are not just precise but aesthetic. Is joy distinct from happiness? Is joy appropriate when there is so much sadness in the world?
